There is an increasing amount of information reported on the label in order to protect and inform consumers. However, the latest idea submitted to the general assembly of the World Health Organisation is shocking: labelling junk food with the same warning messages that appear on cigarettes! The new EU regulation 1169/2011 on food labelling brought improvements and guarantees for consumers, though among the many changes a few negative points remain. The regulation does not make imports easier, in a way it actually complicates them. The chance for each country to introduce additional provisions to apply to their territory hinders the movement of goods in the domestic market and creates confusion among consumers: just think of the different nutritional patterns adopted in the various countries, which differ both in terms of graphic expression and calculation methods. Food labels become clearer

The new European regulations on labelling that came into force in December 2014 aim at helping consumers understand it more easily, primarily thanks to the use of texts with larger typefaces, visibly inserted within the larger surface area of the package. New EU regulation for labels on food products

EU regulation no.1169/2011, which involves the clarity of information on the labels of food products, will enable European consumers to have all the necessary information on the traceability of products, in order to make more informed purchase choices. In addition to information on the provenance of food, the new labelling system must visibly contain information on nutritional values regarding energy content. The percentages of each substance listed in the table must be attached directly to the packaging, calculated per 100 g or per 100 ml and can be expressed per portion. The expiry date must be stated in a visible manner, even on individually packaged products. Traceability of food products, more information on our tables.

RFID technology enables us to keep track of food products, from the production chain to our tables and thus to trace the history of the product. This implies the use of certain encryption technologies and the exchange of information between various operators in the supply chain through smart labelling, thus welcoming that transparency of information desired by the General Food Law Regulation, which requires the indication of the country of origin or place of origin on the label of meat such as pork, beef, mutton and fowl.
